TEHRAN,  (MNA) – According to Essential Science Indicators (ESI), Iranian scientific papers have been cited more than 1,770,000 times globally during last 10-year period which ranks Iran at the top of all Islamic countries in this regard, said the director of ISC Mohammad-Javad Dehqani.

The number of Iran’s highly cited papers have grown from 47 in 2008 to 411 in 2017 which shows the average 24.21 percent annual growth, he said, highlighting, “this shows that Iran has the most significant growth among Islamic countries regarding the quality of scientific productions.”

21.2 percent of total citations of Islamic countries belongs to Iran, he said, adding that Turkey, Saudi Arabia and Malaysia stand next ranks.

Dehqani emphasized that other metrics such as Web Of Science (WOS) focus on the quantity of papers, however, ESI concentrates on the quality of them.

According to Libguides, essential Science Indicators (ESI) is an analytical tool that helps individuals identify top-performing research in Web of Science Core Collection. ESI surveys more than 11,000 journals from around the world to rank authors, institutions, countries, and journals in 22 broad fields based on publication and citation performance. Data covers a rolling 10-year period and includes bimonthly updates to rankings and citation counts.
