Literacy rate among Iranians has increased to 87 percent in the year to March 2018 from 48 percent in 1976, said Education Minister Mohammad Bathaie.

Addressing International Literacy Day on September 8, he added, “We are witness to education of computer skills in country’s education system and diversifying the methods of literacy learning such as through tablets and TV”, Fars News Agency wrote.

Designation of 2018 literacy day as ‘literacy and skills development’ shows importance of improving skills alongside writing and reading, he said.

International Literacy Day was celebrated around the world with the theme ‘Literacy and skills development’. Despite progress made, literacy challenges persist, and at the same time the demands for skills required for work, evolve rapidly.

This year, the day explores and highlights integrated approaches that simultaneously can support the development of literacy and skills, to ultimately improve people’s life and work and contribute to equitable and sustainable societies.

The literacy rate among Iranians of ages 10-49 is 97 percent.

Tehran, Mazandaran, Semnan, Alborz and Isfahan provinces have the highest literacy rate while Sistan-Baluchestan, West Azarbaijan, Kurdestan, Kerman and Lorestan have the lowest rate.
