TEHRAN – Iranian director Reza Farahmand’s “Women with Gunpowder Earrings” has been named best feature-length documentary in the international competition of the 11th Cinema Verite festival.

The film is about Nur, a female journalist who covers stories about Syrian and Iraqi women and children in the war against the ISIS terrorists.

It also brought Farahmand the award for best director in the national competition during the closing ceremony of Iran’s major international festival of documentary cinema, which was held at Tehran’s Andisheh Hall on Sunday evening.

The special jury awarded the best feature-length documentary in the international competition was presented to Ezzatollah Parvazeh from Iran for his “My Mother, My Tribe” about an Iranian nomad woman who chooses an urban life to raise her children.

Parvazeh received the award from Gianfranco Rosi, the Italian filmmaker who was a jury member of the international competition.

The award for the best mid-length documentary went to “The Forest of Love” by Alejandro G. Salgado from Spain, while “No Man’s Land” by Afsaneh Salari from Portugal won the best short documentary award.

In this section, the special jury award was presented Mohammadreza Vatandust from Iran for “Lotus”.

In the national competition, “Iran’s Lady Qods”, Mostafa Razzaq-Karimi’s film about the life story of Khadijeh Saqafi, wife of Imam Khomeini, the founder of Islamic Republic, was picked as the best documentary.

“Laboratory”, co-directed by Mohammad Kart and Ali Hamraz received the special jury award in this section.

The Cinema Verite festival is annually organized in Tehran by the Documentary and Experimental Film Center
