Iran earned a remarkable 3-2 (23-25,25-17,19-25,25-23,15-6) victory over Kazakhstan in the opening match of the Asian Volleyball Confederation (AVC) Cup for Women on Sunday.

In the match held at the at the 5,000-seater Chartchai Hall in Nakhon Ratchasima, Thailand, Maedeh Borhani scored a match-high 29 points for Iran from 21 attacks, 3 blocks and 5 aces, while Mahsa Kadkhoda and Mahsa Saberi added 18 and 16 points respectively.

Anastasia Rostovchshikova led Kazakhstan with 18 points.

“We played with our belief that we can beat Kazakhstan. Our team can improve technically and tactically match by match. In the first set, we played unstably and without confidence. I urged them to play more confidently and our game was improving. We played much better in the following sets,” Iran head coach Javad Mehregan commented after the match.

“The most important thing in my idea is mental conditions. We have to believe that we can win. In terms of the result in this match, I’m happy with it since my team have won. We came here to learn each other,” he added.

Iran have been scheduled to face the Philippines and Australia in Pool C on Monday and Tuesday respectively.
