Iranian documentary, ‘Finding Farideh,’ which was picked by Iranian cinematic officials to represent the country for the upcoming Oscars, failed to make it to the primary shortlist announced on Tuesday.

Co-directed by Azadeh Mousavi and Kourosh Ataei, ‘Finding Farideh’ is about an Iranian woman who was adopted by a Dutch family during her childhood in a Tehran orphanage. Farideh wants Iranians to help find her real parents, IRNA wrote.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced shortlists in consideration for the Oscars in nine categories: Documentary feature, documentary short subject, international feature film, make-up and hairstyling, music (original score), music (original song), animated short film, live action short film and visual effects.

Fifteen films will advance to the documentary feature category after 159 films were submitted in the category. Members of the Documentary Branch vote to determine the shortlist and the nominees.

The 2020 Academy Awards will be presented on February 9, 2020. Last year’s Oscars saw big wins for Olivia Colman (‘The Favourite’) and ‘A Star Is Born.’
